Tale of the White Snake (Madame White Snake)

This is one of four most wide-spread and influential Chinese legends, which was first fictionalized by Feng Menglong in Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). The basic story was set in early Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127—1279), but before that different versions of the story had been passed down from generation to generation for centuries.
The basic story is that a young scholar fell in love with a beautiful young lady who is actually a white snake studying magic for thousands of years and taking on human form. It is believed that love with demon will distort humans’ soul, so a monk comes to rescue the scholar and keeps the snake under Leifeng Pagoda near West Lake.
